Night + Market Song is a neighborhood haunt.
It’s bright and brash and energetic and you’ll like it almost instantly. The wait is survivable, the beer and wine cold and crisp. It’s easy enough for a Tuesday and good enough for a Friday. The bill is tolerable, paid for either in a suit or overalls, because no one is looking, or cares.
Thing is, Song is the type of place where things happen — on dates or nightcaps or even alone. The food is consistently delicious, the mood unpretentious, and the menu, equal parts approachable and exciting. Framed and topless Cindy Crawford will make you feel sexy, the pink curtain beads, young.
32 year-old chef Kris Yenbamroong has no formal training, but was named one of Los Angeles Magazine’s best chefs of 2012. He grew up in a family-owned restaurant and strives for “aharn glam lao,” which translates roughly to “authentic Thai food to facilitate drinking and fun-having amongst friends.” He runs the place with his fiancé, Sarah St. Lifer; the two of them are pretty damn adorable.
If Boss has any sense, Night + Market Song will be a hit. If Hollywood is more their speed, send Boss to Kris and Sarah’s first location, Night + Market. It’s a little bigger, a little more central, and they take reservations.
If Boss is a tasteless, unadventurous asshole, go to Song yourself, demolish a spicy portion of larb gai, wash it down with a bottle of Hofgut Falkenstein Riesling, and make a toast, because you, my friend, have won.
