Bacari PDR

Not so long ago, I was a college senior, living in a house with too many females, burnt out on film school and four years of attempting the USC social scene, as the rest of my life loomed on the horizon. At a certain point, I heard rumblings of an underground restaurant called Paladar — a type of speakeasy dining establishment run by a fellow USC student named Bobby Kronfli and his partner, Alex Chang. As usual, I was late to the party — Paladar was already a hit and friends of mine (Gil Freston and Eric Fleischman (he’s on Tinder!)) were already pioneering a documentary about Bobby’s apartment restaurant. By the time I met Bobby, he was arguably the coolest kid in school.

When Bobby graduated in 2011 he teamed up with his brother, Danny Kronfli, owner of Bacaro LA — a chic little wine bar nestled in a sketchy northern pocket of USC’s University Park. The two of them took a beat-up strip of off-campus real estate and turned it into a place worthy of Boss braving South Central for.

In July of 2013, the Kronfli’s went on to open Nature’s Brew — a coffee shop serving light bites by Executive Chef Lior Hillel. In 2014, they launched a line of their sauces under the name Kronfli Bros (now sold in Whole Foods). Six months ago, they opened their third venture — Bacari PDR, located in — you guessed it — Playa Del Rey.

Like Bacaro LA, Bacari PDR is fun, delicious and chic… the difference is that it’s also steps from the beach. The Mediterranean-inspired small plates are just as good as the drinks. And now, Bacari is open for brunch. It’s a short Uber ride from LMU, but it’s definitely not students-only. Young PDR residents, business professionals, even middle-aged Boss types — likely with smart investments in the up-and-coming hood — they’re all there, and they’re all enjoying themselves.

I may be the USC grad writing about Bobby’s spot, but all bias aside, you and Boss would be hard pressed to find a place in the South Bay better suited for dining with friends, co-workers, or even with Eric Fleischman following that mind-blowing Tinder date.

Mention FeedYourBoss for a desert on the house.
