Low hanging lights, warm, welcoming atmosphere…this city’s crème de la crème, dining on one of the best patios in Los Angeles. Indeed, Terrine has done away with the sub-aquatic, posh interior of Sirena, and restored some LA charm to its predecessor, Pane e Vino. The result: a Beverly Grove brasserie and a gentle reminder that sophisticated food and high-quality service can exist sans white tablecloth snobbery. You may know owner/chef Kris Morningstar from Ray’s & Stark Bar -- that hidden LACMA spot -- or from his stints at Shutters, AOC, Grace, Meson G, Opaline or Casa. But now, finally, he has his own spot and a menu boasting instant classics.
A few no brainers: the Brussels Sprout Salad, served with pecans, apples, dates, pecorino and sherry. Its light and couples well with the Octopus hors d’oeuvre, which gets massaged for a silly number of hours prior to preparation. Inevitable over-ordering will lead to: Foie Gras (choice of preparation) because this is the best place to get Foie since the ban was lifted. Followed by Crispy Pork Belly with sweet-hot mustard and pickles and/or the Stuffed Bone Marrow. The truffled Angolotti maintains excellent flavor, despite an unnecessarily foamy porcini sauce, and the Bavette steak with frites is enough to hold Boss over until L'Entrecote makes its LA debut later this year.
But it’s the Charcuterie that’ll break a once kosher-keeping Boss, because sometimes, bad things are worth divine punishment. In addition to the pork Rilletes, the Duck & Pistachio Terrine, Truffled Chicken Liver and Smoked Beef Deckle are three reasons why Terrine's best plate may also be its simplest.
As for vino… François Renaud and Rory Harrington have created a bold (think rustic reds and deep bordeaux's) and expensive (think triple-digit) wine list that’s well-worth exploring. Recommend the 2011 Gigondas Terrasse du Diable Domaine les Pallières to Boss and forever hold your peace.
Also worth mentioning: Terrine’s brunch menu features items such as Gravlax Tartine and Eggs in Purgatory… and, considering the odds, Terrine probably knows how to froth a Cappuccino.
Bottom line: put it on repeat -- Terrine has staying power.
